FUNCTION metalinguistic
The adjective "metalinguistic" is a word made up of a prefix "meta", which derives from the Greek preposition meta (above), and the adjective "language". It, therefore, literally means "that is above the tongue."
As in the verbal language metalinguistic function is used to give explanations on the language itself (grammar test, vocabulary, etc..), So the visual language, the metalinguistic function occurs in the pictures that explain or illustrate the language itself.
